How Compound Interest Is Calculated

The calculator starts with one initial deposit and applies the selected compounding frequency to the annual rate over the chosen number of years. The standard model is A = P × (1 + r/n)^(n×t), where P is the starting principal, r is the annual rate as a decimal, n is the number of compounding periods per year, and t is the number of years. The interest result is the final value minus the original principal.

Assumptions and practical use

This version models a single initial deposit: it does not add recurring monthly contributions, taxes, account fees, inflation, or changes in the rate. A stated annual rate is an assumption, not a promised return. Try different rates and time periods to understand how compounding changes the projection.

Financial note: The result is a mathematical projection only. Investment returns can be negative or variable, and this calculator is not financial advice or a recommendation to buy a product.

Example and limitations

Compounding means interest is added to the balance and can earn interest in later periods. This page models one starting deposit; use the Investment Calculator when you want to include regular monthly contributions.

Scope: The result assumes a constant stated rate and compounding schedule. It does not predict market performance or include deposits, withdrawals, fees, taxes, or inflation unless explicitly represented by an input.
