How the Calorie Deficit Estimate Works

Enter an estimate of the calories needed to maintain your current weight and the daily calorie intake you want to compare against it. The difference is labeled as a deficit, surplus, or balance. A static energy-equivalent is also displayed for a seven-day period.

Formula and method

Daily difference = maintenance calories − intake calories. Weekly difference = daily difference × 7. The optional energy equivalent uses approximately 7,700 kcal per kilogram or 3,500 kcal per pound.

Tips for better estimates

Maintenance needs are estimates and can change with body size, activity, age, health, and adaptation. Compare trends over time rather than treating one day’s calculation as a prediction.

Important limitations

The static energy conversion does not predict an individual’s actual weight change. This tool is not medical or nutritional advice. Avoid using calorie targets that are unsafe for your circumstances; seek qualified guidance when needed.

Source and important context

Maintenance calories are estimated rather than measured, so the displayed energy difference is approximate. The Mifflin–St Jeor equation is one published method for estimating resting energy expenditure. PubMed: Mifflin–St Jeor equation.
