How the Freelancer Break-Even Calculator Works

Each project contributes its price minus the variable cost. The calculator divides fixed costs and the optional owner-income target by this contribution margin, rounding project counts up to whole projects.

Formula and method

Contribution per project = average project price − variable cost per project. Break-even projects = ceiling(fixed monthly costs ÷ contribution). Projects for target income = ceiling((fixed monthly costs + target owner income) ÷ contribution).

Practical tips

Use average collected revenue rather than the advertised price. Include payment delays, refunds, sales costs, and project delivery capacity when deciding whether the target is realistic.

Important limitations

This is a simplified operating break-even model. It excludes tax, financing, owner benefits, irregular cash flow, capacity limits, and the effect of different project sizes or margins.
