How the Fuel Cost Calculator Works
Enter the one-way distance, select US or metric measurements, and choose one-way or round-trip travel. The calculator combines the total distance with the entered fuel economy and price to estimate fuel required and cost.
Formula and method
US mode: fuel (gallons) = distance (miles) ÷ mpg. Metric mode: fuel (liters) = distance (km) × liters per 100 km ÷ 100. Trip cost = fuel used × price per unit.
Tips for better estimates
Use the vehicle’s realistic average fuel economy rather than its best advertised rating. For a route with multiple stops, enter the total one-way distance for the trip you want to model.
Important limitations
This is an estimate and excludes tolls, parking, traffic-related fuel use, vehicle load, weather, fuel-price changes, and route elevation. The displayed price uses the currency you select.
