How the Body Fat Estimate Works

The tool uses the US Navy circumference method. It combines height and selected body measurements—neck and waist, with hip measurement for the female equation—and applies logarithmic equations to estimate body-fat percentage. Consistent measurement technique is important because small differences in tape placement can change the result.

Interpreting the number

This is an indirect estimate, not a scan or clinical measurement. Hydration, measurement error, body shape, and the suitability of the equation for an individual can affect accuracy. Use the same measurement method when comparing results over time.

Health note: The estimate does not diagnose a health condition or determine whether a particular body-fat level is appropriate for you. Seek qualified clinical or nutrition guidance for personal decisions.

Example and limitations

Circumference-based estimates can be affected by measurement technique, tape placement, hydration, and body shape. Use consistent measurement conditions when comparing estimates over time.

This is a general educational estimate based on the inputs and method described above. It is not a diagnosis, treatment plan, or substitute for individualized advice from a qualified healthcare professional. Page information updated: 4 November 2026.
