How Running Pace Is Calculated

Pace is elapsed time divided by distance. The calculator uses the values entered to derive pace per selected distance unit and, where supported by the inputs, the corresponding speed, time, or distance. Check that the distance unit and time format match the activity you are analyzing.

Using pace in training

Average pace can hide hills, stops, terrain, weather, and changes in effort. Compare like-for-like routes and use splits or perceived effort to understand a session rather than relying on one number alone.

This tool is for general exercise planning. It does not assess fitness, injury risk, or medical readiness for training.

Example and limitations

Pace is elapsed time divided by distance. For example, running 5 kilometres in 25 minutes is 5 minutes per kilometre; pauses or elapsed-time choices can change the interpretation.
