Summary Statistics and the Variance Method

Enter a list of numbers separated by spaces, commas, or line breaks. The calculator reports the count and sum, arithmetic mean, median, mode, variance, standard deviation, and other displayed summary values. The mean is the sum divided by the number of observations; the median is the middle value after sorting.

Population variance in this version

The variance calculation divides the sum of squared deviations from the mean by N, the number of values. That is population variance, not sample variance (which typically divides by N − 1). The mode is shown only when values repeat; a dataset can have no mode or more than one mode.

Example and limitations

A data set of 2, 4, and 6 has a mean of 4 and a median of 4. The variance shown is population variance, which divides by the number of observations rather than n − 1.
