How the Slope Calculator Works
Enter the x- and y-coordinates of two distinct points. The calculator subtracts the coordinates to find vertical rise and horizontal run, then calculates the line equation and angle. Vertical lines are identified separately because their slope is undefined.
Formula and method
Slope m = (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁). Y-intercept b = y₁ − m × x₁. Slope-intercept form: y = mx + b.
Tips for better estimates
Keep coordinate order consistent: x belongs with y for each point. A zero slope means a horizontal line; equal x-coordinates mean a vertical line.
Important limitations
This tool assumes a straight line through two distinct points. It does not perform regression or estimate a trend from a larger dataset.
