How the Volume Calculator Works

Select a three-dimensional shape and enter its dimensions. The tool applies the appropriate geometric formula and displays volume in the selected cubic unit and in cubic meters.

Formula and method

Box: length × width × height. Cylinder: π × radius² × height. Sphere: (4 ÷ 3) × π × radius³. Cone: (π × radius² × height) ÷ 3.

Tips for better estimates

For cylinders and cones, enter radius rather than diameter. For a box, all three dimensions are required and must use the same unit.

Important limitations

These formulas describe ideal solids. Irregular containers, wall thickness, partial filling, or voids are not included.

Worked example

Example: a rectangular box measuring 2 × 3 × 4 metres has a volume of 24 cubic metres. For cylinders and cones, enter the radius rather than the diameter.
