How the Paycheck Estimate Works

Enter gross pay for one pay period, choose how often you are paid, and enter estimated tax withholding and other deductions as percentages of gross pay. The calculator subtracts these estimates and annualizes the resulting take-home pay using the selected pay schedule.

Formula and method

Estimated net pay = gross pay − (gross pay × tax percentage) − (gross pay × other deduction percentage). Annualized net pay = net pay per period × pay periods per year.

Tips for better estimates

Use the percentages shown on a recent payslip when available. If deductions are fixed amounts rather than percentages, convert them to a percentage only as a rough approximation.

Important limitations

Actual payroll withholding depends on jurisdiction, filing status, benefits, retirement contributions, and employer rules. This tool is not a payroll processor or tax calculation for any specific location.

Scope: Withholding and other deductions are percentages supplied by you. The tool does not retrieve tax tables or calculate jurisdiction-specific payroll rules, benefits, credits, or statutory deductions.
